Terrific Teachers Cairns – July 2020

Here is some advice, favourite memories, and more from a few of the terrific teachers we have throughout the Cairns region.

Breck Nielson

St Mary’s Catholic College, Woree

“I enjoy having students stop and thank me years down the line, it’s so genuine.

Teaching has changed so much since I went to school, though teenagers are fundamentally still the same. They want to learn and as teachers we just want the opportunity to teach them well. We want exactly the same thing for a student that their parents do too.

My advice to parents would be to let their child build resilience and to instil a work ethic in them. Find out what gets them up in the morning and nurture it.”

St Gerard Majella School, Woree

“I especially love seeing my past students at high school or starting a career and seeing them be successful. It’s always nice when they stop and say a quick hello. You spend so much time with them over a year (sometimes longer) and it’s nice that they remember you.

The best thing about teaching at St Gerard Majella is the amazing community spirit. I have never been at a school that has such a strong sense of support and compassion.

Every child is different and possesses their own unique attributes. Progress can be small, but they will get there.”

St Andrew’s Catholic College, Redlynch

“My proudest moment as a teacher was when a group of my senior students received highest marks in senior maths and then were all accepted to study Mathematics at Oxford University.

I love teaching the subject, it can make so much sense to students as soon as they can apply their knowledge. You get so many ‘light bulb’ moments from students, it’s great to witness.

My advice to parents is to teach students the importance of resilience. It is okay to fail if they tried their best. You cannot learn anything from a correct answer.”

“The absolute highlight of my long teaching career is being a Teacher Librarian. A common myth is that Teacher Librarians spend their time reading books all day; nothing could be further from the truth. We are first and foremost teachers, and are privileged to work with every student and teacher in the school.

I think most parents do not know that teachers feel they hold such a privileged position in their child’s life. I hope parents know that we love their children and always want the best for them.”

Kelly D’Andrea

St Therese’s School, Bentley Park

“The highlight of my teaching career is seeing a child realise for the first time that they can read. Parents also play a huge role in reading, starting from birth. Reading a book a day is the best thing a parent can do for their child’s education.

The best thing about teaching at St Therese’s is the community. The students, the families and the staff make it a fantastic place to be every day. I count myself very lucky to be a part of something that is more than just a school, it is one big loving family.”

Our Lady Help of Christians School, Earlville

The best thing about being a teacher at OLHOC is teaching and having fun with the wonderful students. Interacting with families and being a part of a fantastic, friendly community.

A highlight of teaching for me is when students have a light bulb moment and understand their learning. It’s great to see their confidence in their learning grow to automaticity.

My advice to parents is to talk to your kids about everything, from current events to travel, animals, space. Discuss, debate and challenge your children in a safe environment to have an opinion and back it up.

How to Save Money on Your Family Lawyer Fees

In a lawyer’s world, our time is your money. Many lawyers charge according to time (as opposed to a fixed fee). This means, the more time we spend on your file, the more it costs you. At Collier Family Law, we know that money is tight and you want the best value for money. This is why we will suggest to you that you can do some of the legwork yourself – as this will reduce your lawyer fees. Here are some examples of what you can do:

Write out your story.

You might find it therapeutic! Let us know the history of your relationship.  Do you have children and how old are they? Where do they live? What questions do you have? Do you have any concerns and fears? What would you like to achieve? This is very helpful when seeing a client for the first time because I can use our time together more effectively if I have some background.

If it is a property matter:

Get together all your financial records – bank statements, superannuation statements, and so on. What is of great assistance is to have a schedule setting out all of your major assets, what you think they might be worth. Who owns them, and what debts you have. This saves a lot of time normally spent asking you these questions at the first appointment.

Prepare and collate the financial documents.

Make two copies if you are delivering a hard copy. It is of great assistance to be given a bundle of documents that have already been separated into the various types, e.g. mortgage statements, bank statements (in date order), superannuation statements, payslips, with a schedule.

Keep asking me what you can do yourself.

I regularly have my clients fill in documents in draft for me to check over; or make their own enquiries where they can – for example, getting three quotes from a valuer. The more you can do, the less I need to, which reduces your fees.

Remember, your lawyer MUST give you a proper estimate of fees at the start of your engagement with them, and keep giving you further estimates throughout the life of your file. If this isn’t covered with you at the first appointment, ask why.

Cairns Is Stepping Up to the Billion Steps Challenge

Cairns is helping to lead the way with The Billion Steps Challenge as part of the Boost Your Healthy initiative. The challenge encourages Queenslanders to log all their daily steps and physical activity. It’s a great way to feel motivated to stay healthy and active during COVID-19. The goal is to collectively reach one billion steps – enough to walk around Queensland’s border almost 60 times!

The initiative is led by Health and Wellbeing Queensland. It is a health promotion agency, and is run in a partnership with the long-running 10,000 steps program. Dr Robyn Littlewood, Chief Executive of the agency, says that we are well on track to reach the target. Funded by the Queensland Government and delivered by CQUniversity for nearly 20 years, 10,000 Steps is a free program that encourages Queenslanders to increase their physical activity.

“Queenslanders have already taken more than 700 million steps towards The Billion Steps Challenge since we launched on Saturday 2 May. So far residents from across 300+ postcodes are logging their steps. We would love to see this grow and reach every region within our State,” Littlewood says.

Over 34 million of those steps have come from within Cairns. This places it in the top 10 of the statewide leaderboard!

Boost Your Healthy Initiative is also bringing together ideas, activities, information and challenges,. They do this by partnering with some of Queensland’s favourite community programs. Designed to inspire and motivate Queenslanders to stay healthy and get active during COVID-19, the initiative is a fantastic way to work together as a community.

CQUniversity researcher and 10,000 Steps program leader Professor Corneel Vandelanotte said, “I would encourage everyone to register and get involved, even if they don’t think they can get to 10,000 steps a day. As long as they take more steps than they normally would, I consider that a success. This is because there is overwhelming evidence that taking more steps has substantial health benefits. Regular physical activity improves mood, happiness, and quality of life, and reduces feelings of anxiety, stress, negativity and depression.”

Every step helps to make a difference.

Sign up and learn about the 10,000 Steps program here.
