WHAT IS AN EXECUTOR OF A WILL?
Dear Nardine, I have booked to get my Will done, and my lawyer has asked me to think about who I want to be the executor of the Will. What do I need to think about with this decision?
Choosing the executor of your Will is an important decision. This is the person who will be responsible for doing everything that needs to be done to ensure your beneficiaries receive their inheritance. Sometimes the decision is easy – for example, if your Will provides for your estate to go to your partner, then he/she should also be the executor.
Otherwise, you need to choose an executor who is someone you trust and who ideally, is about your age or younger. The problem with choosing parents is that in the usual course of life events, you will outlive them. You also need to think about whether having joint executors is a good idea, and you should also choose an alternate executor regardless. There is a lot to think about so make sure you ask your lawyer to talk you through all of the possibilities.
