We love living in Northern Queensland for many reasons and it seems our choice to reside in paradise has been reaffirmed as a good one after leading online travel site Wotif revealed the winners of this year’s Wotif Aussie Town of the Year Awards. Unsurprisingly, Mackay, Airlie Beach and Cairns all got a nod, making the top five!
Running for the third year in a row, the awards recognise destinations that offer well-rated accommodation, great affordability and increasing travel interest on Wotif.Com; a popular travel site demonstrating the top Aussie travel destinations for tourists and locals alike.
2020 will be a big year for ‘staycationing,’ with Wotif’s research revealing one in three Aussies have “fallen back in love with travelling in Australia,” helping boost tourism when we need it the most- in the aftermath of the bushfires, ongoing drought and downturn in international tourism numbers since the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Daniel Finch, Managing Director of Wotif, says, “During what is a tough time for many parts of the country, this year’s awards are more relevant than ever, as a way of recognising the hard-working tourism operators and local businesses who make up Australian tourism”.
Thank You Wotif for the recognition, and for adding our towns and cities to the nation’s travel bucket lists for the year.

With Mackay at number two on the list, Airlie beach coming in at third place and Cairns sitting at fifth, the beautiful state of Queensland really does get to shine – as it truly deserves to. Anyone who lives in these towns or has travelled to them knows how stunning they are. Backing up its 2018 win, Mackay’s lush rainforests, national parks and thriving public arts scene again earned its place high in the list.
