4 ROAD TRIP ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

4 ROAD TRIP ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Road trips mean sitting in the car for long periods of time, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fun. The best way to keep tempers from rising is by keeping the little people in the backseat occupied.

Here are some games that can be played anywhere and anytime, with no need for any money spent on additional equipment.

1. The Alphabet Game

A group game that’s great for kids who know their ABC’s.

How to Play:

  • Player 1 looks around to find something visible that starts with the letter ‘A’.
  • Player 2 then searches for something else visible, that begins with the letter ‘B’.
  • This continues until you have gone through the entire alphabet.
  • For extremely tricky letters like ‘Q’ and ‘Z’, you could use the license plates on passing cars that contain the needed letters.

2. I-Spy

This is a fairly simple game that could be played anywhere.

How to Play:

  • Decide if your spy the objects colour or the first letter of its name.
  • Pick the first ‘spy’
  • The ‘spy’ picks the object, and says the traditional “I spy with my little eye… something colour or beginning with the first letter of the objects name.”
  • Each of the players take turns in guessing at the ‘spy’s’ chosen object.
  • The first player to guess the object becomes the next ‘spy’, and the process repeats.Rock, Paper, Scissors

3. The Name Game

This is an amazing game for kids who have learned to read and can spell an assortment of different words. The difficulty of this game is dependant on the chosen category, time limit and the amounts of repeat each item said has.

How to Play:

  • Decide on the category (e.g. animals, cities, food, TV shows, etc). The time limit for each person to answer and the amount of times that an item can be repeated, if at all.
  • Player 1 says an item that belongs in the previously specified category.
  • Player 2 must then come up with a different item that fits in the same category, and starts with the last letter of the previous word.
  • This repeats for as long as you can come up with words that fit in the guidelines that you decided at the start of the game.

4. Who Am I?

This game requires some general knowledge and some deductive reasoning. The difficulty of this game depends on the chosen category.

How to Play:

  • Chose a category (e.g. celebrities, fictional characters, athletes, etc).
  • Player 1 picks a person from the agreed upon category. After they decide, they ask “Who am I?”
  • Other players take turns asking yes- or- no questions to narrow options. Player 1 will probably have to remind the other players to stick to yes-or-no questions.
  • Encourage the younger kids to ask good questions, to narrow down the option before guessing.

12 MIND-BOGGLING FACTS ABOUT NORTH QUEENSLAND

12 MIND-BOGGLING FACTS ABOUT NORTH QUEENSLAND

From the Great Barrier Reef to the ancient Daintree Rainforest, North Queensland is a fascinating place. Here are some facts that may surprise you!

1. The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world. It’s thought to be over 165 million years old, meaning it has probably co-existed with dinosaurs. This also means it is tens of millions of years older than the Amazon Rainforest.

2. There are 3,000 vascular plant species in the Wet Tropics, including the world’s most primitive flowering plants. The Wet Tropics is home to about a third of Australia’s 315 mammal species as well as 370 bird species. Some of these species aren’t found anywhere else in the world, such as the ringtail possum, quoll, tree kangaroo and more.

3. North Queensland has many big ‘things’. Check out the big cassowary in Wongaling Beach, the big marlin in Cairns, the big gumboot in Tully, the big mango in Bowen, the big banana in Mackay or the big cane toad in Sarina.

4. Thirty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef, along with six species of sea turtles, 215 species of birds, 17 species of sea snake and more than 1,500 species of fish.

5. The Great Barrier Reef is the size of a whopping 70 million football fields, or roughly the same area as Italy, Japan or Germany.

6. The Cairns region is home to the tallest mountain in Queensland – Mount Bartle Frere measures 1611m high.

7. Cassowary babies are raised by males. Females breed with several partners, lay eggs and abandon them. A male will then incubate the eggs as well as raising and defending the chicks for nine months.

8. Eungella is home to some animals that aren’t found anywhere else in the world, such as the Eungella dayfrog, Eungella spiny cray and Eungella honeyeater.

9. Cape Tribulation, north of Cairns, is the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage Listed sites meet; the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

10. Cairns is home to the world’s largest lava tubes. Found in Undara National Park, these lava tubes are thought to be roughly 190,000 years old and were created when lava spilled into a river bed.

11. Cairns became a recognised city in 1923, having grown initially out of gold mining. However, it received its name in 1876, when it was named after the governor of Queensland at the time – William Wellington Cairns.

12. Charters Towers, 150km south-west of Townsville, is home to a record-breaking bull. Johnny Reb (JR) is a Texas longhorn steer with a horn span almost three metres long, and a Guinness World Record to prove it. You can visit him on a wagon ride at Leahton Park on a Texas Longhorn Tour.
