Townsville really has it all; there is the tropical, leisurely Strand Esplanade and the towering Castle Hill standing tall in the middle of the city. There’s stunning nature and plenty of entertainment for adults and kids alike. Whether you’re staying for a while or just passing through, we’ve compiled a list of the best tours around Townsville to make excellent use of your time there.

1. Discover the Great Barrier Reef

Townsville is only a short distance from the stunning underwater wonderland that is the Great Barrier Reef. This vessel will take you on the trip of a lifetime, where you will be given the opportunity to dive and snorkel to get up close with many species of marine life and their coral homes. 2. See Townsville from the sky

If you’re not afraid of heights, and up for an adventure in the sky – this helicopter tour is for you. The flight gives you unobstructed views of Townsville and its surrounding regions. Enjoy the spectacular views of the area while your pilot provides expert commentary. Your pilot will point out key landmarks as well as talk about the history and nature of the region.

3. The best of the city

Townsville has been called the unofficial capital of North Queensland – and with everything it has to offer, it’s easy to see why. With the lively Strand Esplanade, the towering Castle Hill, the military base overlooking Cleveland Bay, and much, much more – there’s plenty to see. This tour is an excellent choice if you’re not staying long but would still like to see the sights of Townsville, or if you’d just like to get more familiar with the landmarks of the area. Your guide will provide commentary along the way of Townsville’s historic landmarks, and groups are limited to 12 people to ensure a private experience.

4. Get up close with marine life

For easier access to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, enter this stunning aquarium offering everything the Great Barrier Reef has to offer, without getting your feet wet! Wander through a spectacular underwater tunnel and marvel at sharks and fish as they swim around you. Look up, and you may spot a shark swimming over your head. Daily animal feeding sessions and talks are also featured providing education about the beautiful reefs of North Queensland and the creatures that inhabit them. 5. Sparkling city lights

This tour will take you on a trip to admire the work of Townsville’s local artists, followed by a delicious dinner at a private location overlooking Townsville’s city lights. The tour concludes with a drive to the top of Castle Hill after the sun has set, which offers unreal 360-degree views of the city and all its sparkling lights, making for some spectacular photo opportunities.
