HOW TO EMPTY YOUR BOWELS THE RIGHT WAY
Dear Emily, I’ve heard there is a wrong and a right way to empty your bowels, is this true?
There most certainly is! One of the biggest contributors to pelvic floor dysfunction is constipation/dysfunctional bowel evacuation. Our pelvic floor’s resting state is more like a sling that wraps around the rectum – effectively acting as a secondary continence mechanism to our main sphincters (like kinking a hose to stop the flow).
This means to empty our bowels we need to ‘unkink’ the rectum to allow stool to pass through easily. The best way to do this is to make sure you are in a simulated ‘squat position’- keeping your knees above the level of your hips, wide apart and your elbows resting on your knees. This will keep the pelvic floor in its most relaxed state allowing you to empty your bowels without too much trouble.
