GOING IT ALONE – SINGLE MUM POWER!

GOING IT ALONE – SINGLE MUM POWER!

Being a mum is by far the most rewarding and challenging role you will ever take on. It is one that requires you to put someone else before you, to keep your head up, even when your motivation is down, and to unleash superhero powers that you didn’t even know you had (like being able to chase away monsters under the bed and heal a wound with a simple kiss).

Like all mums out there, our featured Cairns mums go above and beyond every single day. Not only are they raising children but they’re doing it on their own, and proving being a great mum is not dependent on relationship status.

You may recognise Jojo’s voice as part of the TripleM Breakfast Show brekkie team. However, in addition to making us smile in the morning, Jojo is also an esteemed public speaker and M/C for Lorna Jane and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a promoter for Southern Cross Austerero.

Jojo lives in Trinity Beach with her four-year-old daughter Mia. She is raising her daughter on her own, her way. Jojo’s partner works FIFO.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns?
The community aspect. It’s like one big family. Everywhere we go we will see a friendly face of someone I’ve known for 20 years. Everyone looks out for everyone else.

What’s your favourite thing to do with your daughter?
To go on little adventures. Exploring creeks and waterfalls. Heading on walks to the beach. And we love to cook together.

Who is the person you look up to the most?
I find inspiration from many different people in my life, and it changes on a daily basis. Strong women in my life like my best friend Gina, and also my mum. Mum never ceases to amaze me with how much she does for everyone.

In 2016 Adriana Braid gave up her career in the corporate world to pursue her passion – painting and creating. She started The Painting Party, an art studio predominately for adults but with kids’ sessions as well, which opened in February 2017.

The Painting Party is something truly unique to Cairns. Not only does it provide people with the chance to learn or develop their painting skills, but it also allows them to break away from the daily pressures in a relaxed environment.

In a few short months, Adriana has seen countless customers walk away from a session feeling relaxed and proud of what they have achieved.
In addition to being a business owner, Adriana is also single mum to two children, Declan, 15 and Molly, 14.

What is your favourite thing to do with the kids?
We like being at home together. I love watching them feel relaxed in our backyard, listening to music with friends, playing in the pool and laughing.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns?
First, the mountains – the security of the mountains is definitely what has kept me here for 25 years. Plus, the community – we have a very giving and positive community here in Cairns.

Are there any exciting plans for the future?
We are going to do two painting parties for the volunteers from Reap this month. We are also going to Chillagoe for an off-sight painting party and looking to do more mobile parties in the future.

I am also hoping to develop a program called The Retired and Wise, which will allow the older generation to connect through painting.

Eva is the mum behind Cairns’ leading recruitment consulting firm, Elite Executive, a business she started five years ago. In addition to helping her clients with the recruitment process, she is also a mum to three-yearold Kai. Eva and Kai live in the Northern Beaches.

What is your favourite thing to do with your family?
We love swimming, cycling and exploring but we also really love the beach and the ocean. We love going on weekends away to various places like Mission Beach, the Daintree, Port Douglas and the Tablelands.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Cairns?
There is so much to do here, we are never bored. Every weekend we try and do something new, especially now that my son is getting bigger and it’s easier to go places! It’s the most amazing place to raise a family.

Tell us a little about Elite Executive:
At Elite Executive, we find and place leaders within organisations across Australia and internationally. We have a huge emphasis on customer satisfaction when it comes to fulfilling our clients’ needs. As we are a niche in the recruitment field focusing on executives, it’s important our effort is on market searching for quality candidates who will truly benefit our clients, stay long term and really make
an impact.

Who is the person you look up to the most?
In a business sense, I look up to Richard Branson. He is an innovator and extremely smart businessman who not only puts his staff first but he has fun every day in his job. To me that is so important, to love what you do. Personally, it would have to be my Gran who passed away
nearly 16 years ago. She taught me grace, patience and persistence and to always believe in myself. I miss her every day.
