Exhibitions

Finding the Funny: The Art of Judy Horacek – 15 August to 18 October. This exhibition will be presenting original artwork surrounding environment, social justice and women’s issues. Her picture book worlds for children show a range of animals doing unusual things.

Conversations with Australian South Sea Islanders: A Missing Chapter from Australian History – 25 September to 29 November. Artist Janet Ambrose recounts a missing chapter of history in Australia through interviews and charcoal portraits.

Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection on Tour – 25 September to 29 November. Piccinini wants audiences to think about their place in the world as it advances in biotechnology, digital technologies, blurring the line between nature, humans, and the artificial world.

FREE Virtual Scientific Expedition

The Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney are inviting all children aged 5 – 15 to join this virtual quest. It will explore areas of science, from earth and animals to technology and space. There will be expert panel discussions with huge names in Australian Science, The Living Laboratory 360 degree virtual tour, games, science shows, and more – all until September 15!

Massive Dads Pack to be Won at Magpies Mackay

Rumble on the Reef

Competitors from all over Australia will be gathering to take part in this action sports festival. Along the Great Barrier Reef coastline there will be a lot of talent and competitions from 22 September to 4 October including the Australian National Championships of Skateboarding, cable wakeboarding competition, freestyle BMX and kitefoil championship.

MM Electrical Derby Day

There are the usual, thrilling mid-week horse races throughout September and October at the Mackay Turf Club. But get ready – there is also the MM Electrical Derby Day on Saturday 19 September from 11.00am – 5.30pm. This event is a great day out for anyone with races, Fashions on the Field and entertainment. The dress code is black and white – remember to start working on the perfect outfit!

Hand Heart Pocket River 2 Reef Ride

Raise funds for three local charities with this mass participation ride event on 12 September! The focus is also to encourage people to become more active and involved with their own health through cycling. You can choose to cycle either 35km, 60km, 90km or 135km and enjoy the beautiful Mackay scenery. Cyclists will finish at the Blue Water Quay where breakfast stalls will be waiting to greet you.

Beach Motorcycle Races

On 13 September from 10.00am to 5.00pm, motorcycles will be speeding and racing at this iconic event under the tropical skies. If you’re a thrill seeker, beach lover or family simply looking for fun activities, this is perfect for you. There will be a final King of the Beach race along with competitions between dirt bikes and street bikes. Different ages can enter into their 13 classes, from juniors onwards.

Family-friendly entertainment will include jumping castles, face painting, beach vibe markets and more.

PBR Mackay Stampede

The Professional Bull Riders will be back this October 17 from 7.00pm to 10.00pm to provide a big night of entertainment. 22 of the bravest and keenest riders will compete for glory between each other and go head to head with 52 of the meanest bulls in the nation. Choreography includes lasers, pyrotechnics, live music and so much more to provide a show like no other, full of adrenaline.

The special week is brought to you by BirdLife Australia, the largest bird conservation organisation. Mackay Musical Comedy Players Present the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

This comedic, fast-paced crowd pleaser is sure to make you laugh. Featuring a book by Rachel Sheinkin, that was the Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Award for Best Book, and a vibrant score by William Finn, six ‘mid-pubescents’ will disclose hilarious stories from their home lives while spelling their hearts out and hoping not to make a mistake.

Speed Date the Collection

This easy-going event on 29 October at 5.30pm lets the people of Mackay meet artists’ books from the collection in a fun, informal way. Participants can become familiar with the resource of artists’ books which the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection holds.

Mackay Libraries will continue to deliver a range of interactive programs for carers and their children under five years old. These include signing, talking, reading, all to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. Whitsundays Arts Festival

Celebrate the creativity, Whitsunday’s community and the inspiring environment from 3rd to 5th of October. A number of local interstate musicians will be performing for the crowds and there will be amazing, unique decorations throughout the park. Workshops for lantern making will be held on the 28th and 29th of September, plus there will be additional workshops at the festival involving photography, spray art, painting and more.
