Townsville is a wonderful coastal city with much to offer to both locals and tourists. There’s beautiful nature, playgrounds, free movie nights, food… and the picturesque Magnetic Island is just a ferry away. what more could you ask for? Here’s a list of some of the best free things to do in Townsville with kids:
Take a Walk Along the Strand
The Strand has many attractive features such as playgrounds, a waterpark, numerous bars and restaurants, a pier, and many picnic spots along the way. Stretching 2.2km along the coastline, it’s the perfect outing for a peaceful stroll or a play for the kids.

Swim at The Rockpool
The Rockpool is a swimming area located at the far end on The Strand with a stunning view of Magnetic Island. It’s situated right on the ocean’s edge, providing a safe swimming area without any stingers! With restaurants, a playground and seating close by, it makes the Rockpool an ideal family outing. A lifeguard is on duty from 9am-5pm daily, however the pool is closed on Wednesdays for cleaning.

Play at Rowes Bay and Soroptimist Park
Rowes Bay is a beautiful area often used for bike riding and camping. The bay also features Soroptimist Park with two separate ship-themed playgrounds, one for toddlers and one for school-aged kids. There’s slides, climbing obstacles and swings – something for every age! There are barbecues, walking paths and picnic tables nearby, maintained regularly for public usage.

Go camping at the beach
Townsville’s Balgal and Saunders beach offer free camping for up to 48 hours. There are BBQ facilities available and both locations are pet friendly. You could catch your own dinner or eat at one of the delicious local restaurants – whatever suits you best! So, head down to the sandy shores and pitch up a tent for a relaxing weekend by the seaside.

Discover Paluma Range National Park
Explore the stunning wilderness of the Paluma Range National Park by going for a swim in the cooling waters of Crystal Creek or taking a hike through the breathtaking rainforests of Far North Queensland. Not only that, the drive there is absolutely stunning, offering astonishing views of the surrounding forests and waterfalls.
