Victoria and Western Australia are the first two states in Australia to bring The Baby Box to families in need. Filled with items new mums require, The Baby Box hails from Finland and is currently taking the globe by storm.
In Victoria, The Baby Box Co. is currently distributing the Baby Boxes through the Mummies and Babies in Need charity, where the boxes are filled with donations and delivered via social workers to Victorian families in need.
A similar program is underway via Bundle of Life, a charity that has been established to distribute Baby Boxes through hospitals, health nurses and other social outreach groups in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
In Finland, The Baby Box is part of the rite of passage for parents. Every mother, regardless of background or income, receives a baby box from the government. The box contains a stash of supplies – bibs, bodysuits, nappies, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products – as well as a small mattress that when placed in the box, creates the baby’s first bed.
With its built in mattress, Baby Boxes are an important tool for new parents to practice safe sleep, as opposed to babies sleeping in their parents’ bed or in cots with blankets, which puts them at a 40 times greater risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
The Finnish tradition has proved so successful, that similar programs have been developed worldwide in countries including the US, South Africa, India, the UK and Australia. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were even gifted a baby box by the Finnish government when they were expecting their first child!
