Adventure Mums - #1

Pakmag Admin - Wednesday, January 25, 2012
When kids come along it’s easy to settle in to your comfort zone and avoid doinganything too adventurous (who’s going to look after the kids if we break a leg?).But surely having kids shouldn’t preclude us from trying new things for ourselves?

So, it seemed like a good idea. Grab a bunch of girls, do something different (in this case, rock climbing) and feel the rush of fear and adrenaline that have been largely absent from our lives since we had kids.

Admittedly it took a while to coordinate childcare arrangements but eventually four of us met for our date with adventure.

PakMag: How are you feeling about climbing the rock wall?
Amanda: Vertically challenged! (laughs)
Elaine: A bit nervous but game to give it a go.
Janelle: My heart is racing. I’ve never done rock climbing before and I’m not usually a thrill seeker. Let’s just say, with age comes fear more so than wisdom! (laughs)
Tamara: I used to rock climb when I was in my twenties but I haven’t done it in a long time so I am a little nervous.

PakMag: When was the last time you actually stepped out of your comfort zone?
Amanda: I went Jungle Surfing up at Cape Trib and that was very adventurous for me as I’m not great with heights
Elaine: I did a bungee jump about four years ago but otherwise I haven’t really done anything adventurous since having my daughter
Janelle: Since having kids I have only been jet boating once and that’s it.
Tamara: I’m still a bit of a thrill-seeker and I try to get out and do stuff as much as I can, I just don’t have as many opportunities these days with a little one.

PakMag: If you could step out of your comfort zone and try something you’ve never done, what would it be?
Amanda: Sky diving and white water rafting
Elaine: Climb Mt Everest.
Janelle: Do a cage dive with sharks; I’ve always wanted to do it.
Tamara: I REALLY want to go skydiving again. It’s awesome!

PakMag: So how was your rock climbing experience?
Amanda: Much harder than it looks, you need a lot of upper body strength. But I had good fun with a great group of girls!
Elaine: Reaching the top felt like a great achievement; I’m going home to do more awesome things now (laughs).
Janelle: I’m disappointed I didn’t make it to the top so I will come back another day and have another go.
Tamara: I enjoyed it although it was harder than I thought.

Thanks to Cairns Recreation Centre. Unlimited climbing on the rockwall costs $15 for adults, $12 for kids plus $5 for safety gear. Call 4053 5353 for more information.

Taming the Dragon

TAMING THE DRAGON By Jutta Dempsey Children often feel confused, anxious, hurt, disappointed, frustrated and angry in their efforts to deal with the world around them. Their age, temperament and emotional maturity will largely dictate how they handle these intense emotions but other influences include how anger has been role modelled in the home. Children’s anger becomes..

Playing Music: Benefits to Kids

Learning how to play a musical instrument has many benefits for children, but when is the best time to start? By Nicole Tobin-Donnelly Most parents would like their child to learn a musical instrument at some stage. There are no hard and fast rules for choosing an instrument although I firmly believe children should not be permitted to hop from one to another. You need at least a year on an..

Total Optical: Total Vision

There’s more to vision than 20/20, writes Jane Chin. It often comes as a surprise to parents to discover that although their child has 20/20 vision they are having problems at school due to their visual skills but there’s a lot more to the process of vision than how well you can see. Good vision allows us to plan how we physically interact with our environment and it’..
